Vulnerable Life Writing: A conversation about the ethics, politics, and craft of telling hardship stories

In this special seminar Dr Kim Huynh (ANU) will discuss the ethics, politics, and craft of telling hardship stories in a conversation with Emeritus Professor Christine Helliwell about Kim's latest book, My Old Man and Me: A story of escape, survival and caring.

Kim Huynh is an author, senior lecturer in the ANU School of Politics and International Relations, and ABC Radio broadcaster who helps people tell their stories. His books include his family memoir Where the Sea Takes Us (HarperCollins 2008), Australia's Refugee Politics in the 21st Century (Routledge 2023) and My Old Man and Me: A story of escape, sacrifice and survival (ABC Books 2026).

Christine Helliwell is an anthropologist, author, and Emeritus Professor in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology at ANU. Her most recent book, Semut: the Untold Story of a Secret Australian Operation in WWII Borneo (Penguin 2021), won numerous awards, including the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Australian History in 2022.
